Arkansas Hornaments 2009
It's time once again for players of the French horn in Arkansas to gather around the Christmas tree and have fun serenading the public with our carols! Hornaments 2009 will take place Saturday, December 12. Hornaments is sponsored by the Arkansas Horn Club, a local gathering of the International Horn Society; and the UCA Horn Studio.
Our schedule will be different this year, with all events taking place in the afternoon:
1:30pm - Registration/warm-up (UALR Choir Room) 2:00-4:00 - Rehearsal (UALR Choir Room) 5:00-6:00 - Performance (Park Plaza Mall, at the Santa Tree)
Horn players of all ages and stages are welcome to join the festivities. Adult amateurs and professionals and students alike play side-by-side during this fun and even educational event. Music is geared toward junior-high and older levels. Participants will need to bring a music stand and a folding chair of some kind, which will only be needed at the mall performance. There is no formal dress code, but everyone is encouraged to wear something festive - green, red, santa hats, and decorated horns are great!
There is no fee for registration. Music is provided. If you don't play your horn anymore, please just come and enjoy the music at the mall! Any and all questions may be directed to Dr. Brent Shires, UCA Horn Professor, by email (bshires@uca.edu) or phone (501-472-3350). I hope to see you then!

Mendelssohn’s Seasons world premiere
Mendelssohn's Seasons world premiere for choir and historical and modern brass.
In recognition of the bicentennial of Felix Mendelssohn's birth, Clifford Bevan's Mendelssohn's Seasons, a four movement work for choir and brass, received its world premiere for both historical and modern brass. Oriented for choral forces common to Mendelssohn's (1809-1847) writing and incorporating four poems by the celebrated American poet and linguist Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), Mendelssohn's Seasons is scored for early 19th century brass: natural horn, trombone, English bass horn, and ophicleide, instruments for which Mendelssohn exhibited particular fondness. The original composition, with its allusions to Lobgesang, Sechs Lieder ohne Worte, Elijah, Ein Sommernachtstraum, and Festgesang, is a delightful adaptation of Mendelssohn’s musical style by the contemporary British composer, arranger, and instrumentalist Clifford Bevan.
Mendelssohn's Seasons was first performed in July at the Early Brass Festival, held at Connecticut College, and staged by Berlioz Historical Brass and The Anglican Singers of New London, Ct. Early music brass specialist Wim Becu served as guest conductor, and members of Berlioz Historical Brass included Jeffrey Snedeker on natural horn, David Loucky on trombone, Craig Kridel on English bass horn, and Douglas Yeo on ophicleide. In November, The Anglican Singers, conducted by Simon Holt, staged the premiere of the work with modern brass, including two horns, trombone, and tuba. Mark E. Weaver, principal trombonist with the United States Coast Guard Band, and other brass instrumentalists participated in this performance.

South West Horn Convention
Greetings Fellow Hornists! My colleagues in the SDSO horn section join me in inviting you to the 2010 Southwest Regional Workshop of the International Horn Society, to take place in San Diego from May 14-16! When Doug Hall and I attended the IHS Symposium in Macomb this past June, we were so inspired by the goings-on of that week that we started to put our heads together about how we might host such an affair here in San Diego. It happens that this season'ss SDSO performance schedule includes many of the orchestral horn repertoire's greatest chestnuts, most notably our performances of Eine Alpensinfonie of Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring which will coincide with this Southwestern Horn Convention. We're also very excited to have such a star-studded roster of guest artists who have agreed to participate, including: - Eric Ruske - David Krehbiel - Dr. Annie Bosler - Don Greene - Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse We have many great events in the works and would love if as many people as possible can attend. Submit your registration today by going to: www.southwesthornconvention.com

Dr. Fred Ehnes
Since I don't see it here, I am posting. Dr. Fred Ehnes passed away on August 6th, 2009. He was the long time horn professor at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. He also held many local principal horn spots. He was loved by all who knew him, and his passing makes the world darker, but we take joy in knowing he is in a better place, saving a spot for us. His complete obituary can be found here: http://www.thestarpress.com/article/20090809/OBITUARIES/908090350
