Julia Burtscher served as Executive Director of the International Horn Society from 2019-2023, and is also a lifetime member of the IHS. A native of Toledo, Ohio, she started playing horn in junior high after switching from trumpet. She studied with Mary Kihslinger through the University of Toledo until graduation, then went on to earn her BA in Music from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, studying with Dr. Steven Gross and Michael Hatfield. Many years later she went back to the University of Cincinnati to earn her Masters of Business Administration.
Julia’s career path took some interesting turns and she has spent 25 years in the North American Railroad industry as a subject matter expert for software designed to run almost all aspects of shortline and regional railroads. Throughout the years she has never stopped playing her horn, though, enjoying many ensembles in Cincinnati, Ohio, Atlanta, Georgia, and back in Toledo, Ohio where she now resides with her husband Todd and their four-legged feline children.
