Description

This horn came to me in great playing and cosmetic condition with a valve rebuild by George McCracken.

I wanted to turn it into a more versatile instrument and made the following customizations.  All work was done professionally:

Replaced original 1-3 valve levers with new articulated levers from Conn.  The thumb valve was articulated from the valve rebuild.

Removed original detachable bell and replaced with a NOS uncut Conn 9DY bell.  Why a 9D?  The 9D was a medium throated version of the 8D bell, and I thought it would make a better size match for the OEM Schmid ring that I had installed.   The 9DY bell flare is 496g and fits on Schmid horns, I’ve used it on my Eb triple.  Also added were 8D style braces on the leadpipe and bell tail, for aesthetic reasons.

The result is a horn that blows and slurs like an efficient Elkhart pre-letter series.  Plus, the possibilities for color are endless with Schmid bells - I have tried two Medium Spun bells on this horn for solo/chamber work and loved the result.  I’ve imagined what a wide with garland or hand-hammered Hollywood cut would do.

Included in sale:

Original bell tail section and flare - this flare does not have a Schmid ring

Original valve levers

Longer brass tuning slide

Used MB-4 case (black)

Asking price: $5800
