Description

REDUCED PRICE!

This horn was custom built for Dr. Samuel Ursu, DDS, by George McCracken. McCracken was at the time the head of french horn instrument manufacturing for King Instruments. It was one of the last horns McCracken made while working for King, and he included some unusual features in the horn which would later be used in his custom-made horns.

The horn is basically the King Eroica model with modifications. The detachable lead pipe and the detachable bell are two unique features of this particular horn. It took about 1.5 years for the horn to be made since McCracken was working on it in his spare time.

The lead pipe of the horn has a large bore. There was a second lead pipe made, which was misplaced at some point. A new one could be made by McCracken if necessary. The bell is larger than current bells being used in the new McCracken horns.

The horn was probably completed in the late 70s or early 80s (exact date unknown). It is a fine instrument and was tested by Bryan Kennedy who was with the Detroit Symphony prior to his taking a job as Professor of Horn at the University of Michigan.

I've owned the horn for around 30 years, but it's been unplayed for the last two decades and I've come to the realization I'm probably not going to be picking it back up...the horn deserves a good home with someone who will play it regularly. The horn is in excellent shape, with one small blemish (1-2 mm in size) on the bell and some fine scratches on the lead pipe under the keys. No dents or other defects.
