This award was created in 2024 in memoriam of Honorary Member Michael Hatfield, who was recognized as a dedicated teacher and distinguished performer. A humble person, Michael Hatfield quietly served others in the music world and his community in many ways. Service to others was central in his life. The Michael Hatfield Service Award is awarded to a high school or undergraduate student who has contributed in service to the horn community or to their community-at-large.
Award: $500 to be used to cover symposium fees and/or symposium housing and a private lesson with an IHS Advisory Council member.
Age Requirements: One award for a full-time student 18 years or younger on January 2 of the award year. One award for a full-time student 19-26 years on January 2 of the award year.
Application Requirements:
The Michael Hatfield Service Award is awarded to a high school or undergraduate student who has contributed in service to the horn community or to their
community-at-large. To apply for this opportunity:
- Complete the Hatfield Award Application Form (must be logged in to access), including proof of full-time public or private school, conservatory, or university enrollment must be provided at the time of application; students must be enrolled in the academic term immediately preceding the symposium.
- Students must submit 2 letters of recommendation along with their application or ask their recommenders to send the letter to exec-director@hornsociety.org. One of these letters of recommendation must attest to the student’s record of service.
