Volunteer Leadership Position

Position Summary

The Military Liaison serves as the primary connection between the International Horn Society (IHS) and horn players serving in military bands. The liaison works to strengthen relationships with military musicians, increase awareness of IHS programs and opportunities, and ensure that the interests and perspectives of military horn players are represented within the Society.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principal point of contact between IHS and active-duty, reserve, retired, and civilian horn players affiliated with military bands.
  • Promote IHS membership, programs, conferences, competitions, publications, and educational opportunities within military music communities.
  • Identify and communicate opportunities for collaboration between IHS and military music organizations.
  • Assist in recruiting military horn players to participate in IHS events, presentations, performances, and committees.
  • Provide periodic updates to the IHS Executive Director and Advisory Council regarding military music activities and issues relevant to horn players.
  • Maintain awareness of military band programs and personnel changes that may affect IHS outreach efforts.
  • Help recognize and highlight the accomplishments of military horn players through IHS publications, social media, and other communications.
  • Serve as an advocate for military horn players and provide feedback on how IHS can better serve this constituency.
  • Attend periodic virtual meetings with IHS leadership as requested.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a horn player in a military band, military music organization, or substantial professional involvement with military musicians.
  • Active involvement in the horn community and a commitment to the mission of the International Horn Society.
  • Strong communication and networking skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional relationships across multiple military organizations and branches.
  • Current IHS membership required.

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 2–4 hours per month.
  • Participation in occasional virtual meetings.
  • Attendance at the International Horn Symposium is encouraged but not required.

Term of Service

  • Two-year renewable term, subject to mutual agreement and review by IHS leadership.

Reporting Relationship

The Military Liaison reports to the Executive Director and works collaboratively with the Advisory Council, committees, and other IHS representatives.

Desired Outcomes

The Military Liaison will help:

  • Increase engagement of military horn players with IHS.
  • Improve communication between IHS and military music organizations.
  • Expand military participation in IHS programs and events.
  • Ensure military musicians have a voice within the International Horn Society.

Compensation: Volunteer position; no salary is provided. Reasonable pre-approved expenses incurred on behalf of IHS may be reimbursed in accordance with Society policies.
